MobileMangrove a Mobile Based Mangrove Species Field Guide
Table of Contents
Introduction of the Study
The capstone project entitled “MobileMangrove: Mobile Based Mangrove Species Field Guide” is mobile based system intended to be used as a source of information about mangrove species. MobileMangrove will facilitate information about the different species of mangroves base on its leaves, flowers, fruits, bark and roots.
Awareness about the importance of mangroves must be instill in peoples mind. According to research, mangroves help protect our shorelines from damaging storms, wind, waves and floods. It helps maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land. Mangroves help and protect coastal areas in various ways resulting to various groups initiating to plant mangroves. But due to lack of knowledge about mangrove species, the planting initiative did not yield positive results. What people need is a broader awareness about mangrove species.
Proposed Innovation
To address the problem mentioned above, the researcher of this project aims to design and develop an application that contains information about mangrove species. Information ranging from the classification of mangroves base on its visual aspects up to under what condition it is best to be planted. By having this application, those people who have initiative in planting mangroves will be knowledgeable enough to know what specie of mangrove should be planted.
Objectives of the Study
General Objective – the main objective of this project is to design and develop a mobile based system that contains information about different species of mangrove species.
Specific Objectives
The following are the specific objectives of this study:
- Output of the capstone project will contain information about all the species of mangroves.
- The system will provide specification of the specific parts of the mangrove for identification.
- To design a system that will help in increasing the numbers of mangroves planted in shorelines.
- Develop a system that is helpful and easy to use.
Significance of the Study
End-users. The end-users of the system are those who organizations or people who are advocating in planting more mangrove trees. The system will help them to identify the right mangrove specie to be planted under certain condition.
Researchers. The success of this project will contribute to their knowledge and skills as programmers.
Future Researchers. The study will help them in upgrading the system or they can use the study as a basis if they wish to pursue the same study.
Development Tools
Software requirements
The software requirements as follows:
Android Operating System (OS): 4.0 to higher version
Android Studio – Is one of the tools that the researchers used as it is the code editor and the designer tool (www.ebookfrenzy.com)
PHP: Hypertext Pre-processor – It is the way how to build interactive Web sites and applications, one of the most popular Web programming languages in use today (Matt Doyle).
Java – Is used as it is the outstanding language of the Internet (www.oracle.com).
MySQL – Is used by most modern websites and web-based services as a convenient and fast-access storage and retrieval solution for large volumes of data (weblearn.ox.ac.uk).
